Leopard tortoise for sale
Below you will find information on the care of the African leopard tortoise. We will cover everything from exact habitat setup and parameters, to diet, size, lifespan, and more.
Leopard tortoise Habitat
First, consider if you’d like to purchase one habitat and then create another one as your animal grows. If you’re looking to create a habitat that last the life of the animal that may be difficult to do and you consider the adult size. But we so that should be of utmost importance. For that reason we like to use something that we can control the lid or top by keeping it fairly intact and sealed. In our breeding and baby facilities, we use reptile foggers which helps keep them healthy and growing with a smooth shell. Using something like a tank is fine, but remember to close off the sides at least three of them so the animal cannot see out. This is important so they do not get frustrated and stressed because they do not understand the concept of clear glass as being a wall or barrier.
Temperature
Since tortoises are reptiles and reptiles are cold blooded keeping a thermal gradient will be key to constructing a successful habitat. Using a thermal gradient could not be more important for housing a Tortoise. Keeping one side hot typically 90 to 95° for a Leopard Tortoise is important. While keeping the other side colder, in the area of 72-77 degrees is also just as important. If you’re home is in the 80s for example, the coldest your tortoise will be able to experience is 80s. This is ok for some but not all species. For example tortoises for sale from dry areas like Africa (besides rainy season) are typically ok with higher median temperatures. Where as tortoise for sale from Europe mainly Testudo species will need larger gradients to mimic what they experience in the wild. This also is true for maintaining their natural breeding habits for future propagation of the small tortoise species.
Water
Please provide your baby tortoise with access to clean water. Always make sure that you do not have them in an area where they could fall or flip over for this reason check on them throughout the day as that does tend to happen when we give them access to water. If you were unable to check on them throughout the day sometimes it’s a better idea to not provide them access to water but to make sure that you soak them twice a day for 10 to 12 minute intervals and extremely shallow water. Use water that is so low that they need to dip their beak down to drink it. We say it in this way to show that there is clear importance on the subject of soaking the baby tortoise in shallow water to prevent drowning risk which can happen in 1″ of water.
baby tortoise diet
What you feed your baby tortoise is extremely important. We recommend a variety of greens including Romaine, collard and mustard greens as well as endive, and other greens in moderation. In addition to that we typically shred up some carrot and combine it with Mazuri brand tortoise food which is soaked in water until the pellets are soft. We also sprinkle calcium on the Mazuri tortoise chow while it is soaking. Feeding your tortoise every day is fine, or even every other depending on what you are feeding and the quality of the food. It is highly recommended that you feed your tortoise directly after soaking them. Feeding under or near the heat lamp area is also a good idea as they like to spend a lot of their time in the warm air basking.
